    Beautiful cover – so evocative of the life of the novel… Love your beautifully distilled description: ‘Sky-blue formica, fresh lemonade and the scent of cut grass.’ You’ve inspired me to re-read the novel (I’ve got a really happiness-inducing Folio Society edition that I bought last year – but I think I like this first edition’s design even more…)

    • I remember reading it through in one session many years ago now. I think writing crowd-pleasing novels, and being prolific, lost him the respect of the literary establishment. I’m always pleased there was a full chapter about H E Bates alongside Virginia Woolf, John Keats and Evelyn Waugh in my 1980s ‘W H Smith book of Great Writers’! His short stories are the equal of anyone…
